The new bridge in Wijnegem, Belgium in the construction of which Sarens was involved, will improve the road connection for pedestrians and cyclists, revitalising not only the infrastructure and economy of the region, but also promoting sustainable transport. On the job site, high-tech equipment was used, including the LTM1500-8.1 and AC500 cranes, which were selected for their exceptional capabilities and were mobilised as efficiently as possible by road travel. Sarens used its cranes onsite twice marking a record execution time of two days for a project of this scale.

The new Wijnegem bridge will improve the road connection for pedestrians and cyclists. The main purpose of the project was to replace an older structure, thus ensuring a safer and more efficient infrastructure.

This project is of great importance for Wijnegem, and the workshops at Kluizendok, Ghent where the bridge was assembled are located. The improved road connection not only facilitates the mobility of citizens, but also encourages the use of more sustainable modes of transport, thus contributing to a reduction in pollution and promoting a healthier lifestyle. In terms of social impact, the successful completion of this project has not only improved the road infrastructure, but also generated local employment and boosted the economy in the Antwerp region, reaffirming Sarens' position as a leader in the construction sector and contributing significantly to the progress and sustainable development of Belgium.

The choice of Sarens as project leader was no accident. The company proved to be the most suitable choice thanks to its track record of success, international experience and engineering capability. Sarens' excellence in managing projects of this scale was a determining factor, and its commitment to quality was perfectly aligned with the client's expectations. Importantly, a number of critical issues were undertaken during the planning phase, including the risk of kipping of bridge parts. However, Sarens' expertise in risk management and meticulous approach to planning, ensured the successful execution of the project.

On site, high-tech equipment was used, including the LTM1500-8.1 and AC500 cranes, which were used to lift 12-meter-high pieces weighing up to 237 tonnes. These mobile telescopic cranes were selected for their exceptional capabilities – especially useful for the unique needs of the project – and were mobilised as efficiently as possible by road travel. The transportation of the additional counterweights required precise coordination. The installation took minimal implementation time, demonstrating the operational efficiency of the Sarens team.

The project still had its challenges, and one of the most critical aspects was the transport of the bridge from Kluizendok to Wijnegem on pontoons via canal. However, the team demonstrated their technical skill and ability by executing the project in record time.

Luc de Meester, Key Account Manager stated, "The construction of the new Wijnegem Bridge marks a significant chapter in the history of infrastructure development in the region. Our meticulous approach, international experience, and commitment to excellence have proven their worth for projects of this scale. Beyond the physical construction of the bridge, the social and economic impact extends to creating local jobs, promoting sustainable modes of transport, and boosting the regional economy".

Sarens has extensive experience in carrying out large projects in Belgium, such as assisting with the heavy lifting of tanks at the Citrosuco plant in Ghent. Sarens has also assisted Cargill in the maintenance of its facilities, providing the necessary machinery to maximise biodiesel production, and has also been able to assist in the assembly of several of the stages for the last edition of Tomorrowland 2023, consolidating its role as an ideal partner for the economic and social development of the region.
