In 2023, Hinkley Point C (HPC) witnessed remarkable feats in heavy lifting operations, showcasing innovative solutions and technical prowess. Among the standout achievements were the lifts of the U1 HK Transfer, Unit 2 reactor ring with TAM, the U1 Polar crane and then just before the end of the year, the Installation of U1 Dome. For all installations, the SGC-250 ‘Big Carl’ (HLC – Heavy Load Crane) was used.

The U1 HK Transfer lift, weighing a staggering 1.200 tonnes, showcased a sophisticated tackle arrangement, highlighting the precision and complexity of the SGC-250's lifting capabilities. Similarly, the Unit 2 reactor ring lift, compounded by a shifted Center of Gravity (CoG), demanded an intricate solution combining Novum Lift Frame, Sarspin cylinders, and an adjustable ballast system.

One of the pivotal assets of the project, the Polar crane, acted as a versatile tool for fuel assembly tasks and reactor head maintenance, underscoring its importance in multifaceted lifting operations. Comprising a main hoist, auxiliary hoist, maintenance jib crane, and containment inspection man lift, the Polar crane was a very useful tool for both adaptability and efficiency.

The Sarens team played a crucial role in executing these feats, comprising professionals ranging from site managers to riggers and slingers. Their expertise and dedication ensured the seamless execution of complex lifts, overcoming challenges with ingenuity and precision.

As the project progresses, with SGC-250 (HLC) to remain onsite until all heavy lifts have been accomplished, HPC navigates towards key milestones. Despite challenges, such as intricate lift solutions and project timeline constraints, HPC remains committed to delivering exceptional results.

Client satisfaction stands as a testament to the SGC-250 performance, with accolades for technical solutions and operational flexibility. While the client's primary focus lies in concrete pouring, they recognise and appreciate SGC-250 efforts in addressing technical challenges and accommodating project demands, fostering a collaborative and fruitful partnership.

With the 1000-lift mark now behind us, Sarens surpassed the contracted 700 lifts with zero accidents or time-lost incidents. The project's success so far echoes beyond the confines of heavy lifting, symbolising a triumph of innovation, expertise, and unwavering commitment.
