Sarens is proud to highlight the successful completion of two projects at Flémalle and Seraing, both aimed at future-proofing the Belgian energy grid. These endeavours showcase our expertise in heavy lifting and transportation, as well as our unwavering commitment to safety and precision.
The connection between these two projects is their collective goal to enhance energy production and reliability in Belgium. Located just five kilometres apart in the Liège region, the new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants at Flémalle and Seraing are designed to provide high efficiency and flexible deployment. These plants will play a crucial role in compensating for fluctuations in green energy production, particularly on cloudy or rainy days.
At Flémalle, as part of the new 875 MW power plant's infrastructure upgrade, Sarens undertook the complex task of lifting and transporting of
6 module types with gross weights ranging from 160 to 366 tonnes including special lifting frames and
3 drums the gross weight of which ranged from 21T to 176T, also including special lifting frames
This project involved meticulous planning and the use of specialised equipment. A Liebherr LR1750 and LR11000 performed tandem lifts, while Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) facilitated movement within the plant. The challenges included limited space and stringent safety protocols. Our team conducted thorough risk assessments and adhered to all safety guidelines to ensure a successful, incident-free operation.
In Seraing, we built an extension next to the existing power plan similar to what we executed in Flémalle. The extension was transported on 24 SPMT axle lines from storage to the site. The equipment we decided to deploy were the mighty CC6800 and the CC3800 as a tailing crane for the building of the extension. Towards the end of the project, we exchanged the CC3800 for an LR1750. Our team methodically planned the transport and lifting operations also keeping a close eye over a high voltage power line that traverses the site, securing safety for all project components and crew involved. Precision was paramount and the expertise of our team, ensured the extension was transported and built with no accidents or downtime, with the existing power plan continually in operation.
These projects at Flémalle and Seraing exemplify Sarens' ability to handle complex heavy lifting and transportation operations. Their successful completion underscores our dedication to safety, precision, and excellence. These achievements also highlight our advanced equipment and unparalleled expertise, ensuring we meet and exceed our clients' expectations. Sarens continues to set the benchmark in the heavy lifting industry, delivering innovative solutions that drive progress. For more details about our projects and services, visit Sarens.
